I can’t say if you’ll agree with me on this but in youth soccer drills, defense is the foundation on which the game depends. When the score in a game is 0-0, it denotes defense played flawlessly by both the sides.

But, in kids soccer drills, there are two phases to winning a game. First is when an exceptional defense is demonstrated. And the second is by having a great offense that has the capacity to overcome the other team’s defense.

Your player’s won’t be able to score if they can’t get the ball. There are a few coaches who tend to teach their players either of the two; offense or defense. But, complete training of players requires them to play defense when the ball is with the other team and offense when they themselves have the ball.

In youth soccer practice, players who lose the custody of the ball must immediately go after the ball. This is very important and makes sense because the one who loses the ball is nearest to the ball. So, it’s necessary that this player puts pressure upon the other player who has the custody of the ball now.

Youth Soccer Drills

This is to say that he should attempt to get the ball back into his custody again. This will also provide enough time to other players in the team to return to their form and get into the defensive positions. This will restrict the opponent player’s movement in the field with the ball in his custody.

Players can be made to learn these skills by following the given techniques;

Immediate chase: When this is effectively done in youth soccer drills, it puts pressure on the opponent from all the sides. And eventually this has the effect of them losing the possession of the ball or executing a wrong pass.

This arc is adjacent to the goal. It originates from one corner post of the goal crossing through the corner of the goal box and moving on to the touchline. The chances of a goal being scored are high when the ball is in this area.

You should deflate the ball in case of teaching this skill to your players for the first time. This can be done by letting some air out of the ball so that it shrinks and becomes soft and supple for kids to play. Before I get down to the details of kids soccer drills on heading, let me share with you the basics of this skill that players need to be taught first.

The players should learn to move along the ball while it is still in air because they need to be in front of the ball when making a contact with it. The players must keep their eyes fixed the ball all the way through, till the time it comes into contact with their forehead.

The kids must know the importance of keeping their eyes open and watch the ball coming to and going away from them. If their eyes are closed, they can be hurt. In youth soccer practice, players should be taught to strike the ball with the top-front area of the forehead instead of the temples or crown of the head.

Youth Soccer Drills

Majority of the youth soccer drills lay stress on the value of movement necessary to head the ball accurately. Out of many, here are two drills that your players can perform.

Sitting and Knees: This youth soccer coaching drill involves just 2 players and a ball. One player should sit on the ground with the legs spread out in the front. When kids find some free time, instruct them to play with the ball.
Teach them to take a seat and rotate the ball from side to side using the weaker foot. The more it is done, the more control can be maintained with the ball.

It is something that being a coach, I would want to stress that warming up is obligatory and an important practice to lead the team towards a better start of the day. In youth soccer drills, this point is easily skipped by many coaches. This has an end result in terms of injuries to players when in the practice sessions.

This article gives you some nice tips on how to get the team warmed up. The team should be guided to use such body movements that have the effect of warming up all muscles. This is the right way to wake up the entire nervous system. Warming up in haste could cause cramping or stiffness of the body muscles.

As a coach, I just cannot emphasize enough that warming up before sessions is not just mandatory but also a great way to kick start your training sessions. In youth soccer drills, coaches fail to take this aspect into consideration. This has a direct affect on the health of players in form of injuries while practicing.

This article gives you some nice tips on how to get the team warmed up. Train the team to use the body movements in a way that all the muscles get worked up. This is the right way to wake up the entire nervous system. Rigorous sessions can result in stiffness and cramping of the muscles.
