Sports programs reinforce positive character traits in young children that they will develop until they reach adulthood, enabling them to become more production members of society. That is why many people stand firmly behind the athletic programs in our schools. Kids learn a lot of character molding lessons simply by being part of a youth soccer team.
One thing that is learned is a kind of mental strength that you just can’t learn from reading a book. The child learns that good days and bad days are a part of life. He or she learns that you can be on top of the world one moment and the bottom of the heap the next but they learn to deal with it.
Another great lesson they discover is that they are becoming much more physically fit. Instead of becoming a couch potato, drinking pop and eating chips while watching sports on TV, they get to experience the joy of the sport and also reap the benefits of stronger muscles and increased energy.
The social benefits are vast. Today a lot of kids like to keep to themselves, becoming distant and bashful. By playing on a soccer team, children learn to relate with others better. They learn what it means to play a part of the big picture which will become a great foundation for them as they mature, later graduating from school and start their career. Because as we all know the letter “I” is missing from the word team and this is a great lesson to learn early in life.
Many times kids learn that they can divert the blame for the mistakes they make to others, and a lot of times it may work for them. Not a great lesson, but one that they learn none-the-less. However, through practical experience playing soccer children learn the truth about accountability. If they are responsible for being goalie and they miss the ball (pardon the pun) then they are held accountable for making that mistake. This is another very valuable life lesson that is best learned as early in life as you can. They also learn a huge part of accountability comes in the form of dependability. For your team to develop confidence that you passed the ball you will play your position well, you have developed a track record over time of proven dependability.
Finally the child will learn the ability to see past themselves and that they are a part of a much greater plan. The experience will encourage them to get over being so self-centered, which is a natural trait in young children.
As children play on the team, experience teaches them the amount of work they put forth to improve their game is rewarded by better performance on the field. Hearing words of affirmation from their coaches and members of the team such as, “Awesome Play!” can create a huge lift in their self-assurance. To recognize player achievements such as MVP, Most Improved Player, etc. many coaches choose to give out personalized soccer awards. A child learns that developing their skills and hard work pays off. Achievement awards are usually given to players by the coaches during a ceremony at the end of the season. Kids learn to enjoy the accomplishments of others as well as their own. At this time many coaches give soccer gifts to every player as a keepsake for the season and also as a way to declare a job well done.
Soccer is a great sport that can teach a lot of valuable lessons to young minds and help to formulate ideas and mold the young clay like minds into great adults with good morals and outstanding outlooks on right and wrong.
